Gerald Donaldson

Board of Directors
Community Advisor

Gerald Donaldson has dedicated his life to helping Seattle students and families thrive. Affectionately known across the city as “Mr. D,” he began his career at the Central Area Leadership Program, supporting students in three area high schools. Gerald then moved to Leschi Elementary School, where he served for 30 years in a family support role, tailoring services to the evolving needs of the community. His office quickly became a haven for students in need of breakfast, homework help, a chat, or an opportunity to be heard.

Although technically retired, Mr. D is active in several youth mentoring programs and is one of Seattle Schools’ most trusted substitutes, stepping in as school Principal for the day, supervising playgrounds, or packing food donations. In 2021, King County honored his extraordinary service with the first-ever Larry Gossett Community Service Award, recognizing a single King County individual each year for advancing racial equity and social justice. Awardees are nominated by King County residents themselves, underscoring the enormous service Gerald has provided over the decades and the gratitude and trust he has earned from his community.
